The recently published Hydrogen Strategy update to the market: July 2022 report, released by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), revealed that the government's planned consultation on domestic boiler and heating system standards, outlined in its Hydrogen Strategy published last year, would consider a requirement for new domestic gas boiler to be hydrogen-ready from 2026.

This consultation will also seek to consider measures designed to improve in-home boiler performance and increase energy efficiency, as well as the role of gas boiler-heat pump hybrids in the transition to low carbon heating.

The Hydrogen Strategy update also stated that BEIS continues to target a policy decision in 2023 on whether to allow up to 20% hydrogen blending (by volume) across the existing gas network. In the event that a decision is made in 2023 to allow blending up to 20%, BEIS does not anticipate blending at a commercial scale to commence before 2025 at the earliest, however.
