Now in its fourteenth year, HIP says the Learner of the Year competition provides a fantastic platform for apprentice and student plumbers to show off their skills, build confidence and win an array of prizes to support them at the very start of their careers.

Level 2 and 3 plumbing students will compete in six regional heats across England and Wales, between January and February.

The winner of each competition heat will go on to compete against one another in the Grand Final, which will take place at the head office of Worcester Bosch in April 2023. Along with the prestige for the student and the college for winning a national competition, there are also prizes up for grabs.

The competitors will be judged on a number of practical tasks by competition Head Judge Jerry Whiteley, Technical Manager from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering. Glenn Scholfield, Technical Training and Support Manager from Pegler, will also be joining the judging panel.

Last year’s winner was Ruben Duggan, from Coleg Y Cymoedd. Speaking to anyone who was thinking of entering the competition this year, he said: “Definitely get in it! You don’t know your strengths and weaknesses until they’re tested – the competition is a fantastic opportunity. It’s a massive thing to put on your CV. I think it will impress any of the big manufacturers and it’s given me so much confidence so it’s a big, big win!”

Zoë Tanner, Managing Director at HIP, said: “We’re thrilled to see HIP Learner of the Year grow year on year, and it’s encouraging to see the competition being supported by so many big names from the industry. It’s a fantastic way for young installers to build their confidence and take pride in their hard work.

"Now more than ever is the time to support the next generation of plumbing and heating talent and we can’t wait to see what the competition brings.”

Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication & Product Management at Worcester Bosch, HIP Learner of the Year Platinum sponsor, said: "It is essential that the next generation of plumbing and heating engineers are supported by the industry – helping them navigate through their training as they work towards their qualifications.

"This is why Worcester Bosch is continuing their support as Platinum Sponsor for HIP Learner of the Year, as it is a great way for the next gen to hone their skills. We look forward to seeing the competition progress."

HIP is also launching its first ever national Female Skills Competition for female plumbing learners next year.

Level 2 and 3 plumbing students of all ages, from colleges nationwide, will be able to compete in a live practical installation for the chance to win a place in the Grand Final.

Becky Bates, plumber and competition judge, said: “This exciting platform is just the place for women to feel confident in showing off their incredible skills and knowledge they have gained so far. It enables them to step into the limelight and showcase to other women the kinds of opportunities that are available.”
