According to the government, the taskforce was launched to "devise a workplan to help reduce total UK energy demand by 15% from 2021 levels by 2030 across domestic and commercial buildings and industrial process – while cutting bills and helping push down inflation."

It was chaired by Minister Lord Callanan and NatWest CEO Alison Rose at its outset, with members from organisations including the National Infrastructure Commission, housebuilder Barratt Developments, the UK Green Building Council, and National Energy Action.

Members were informed in a letter that the Taskforce was being wound up, which was first reported by the BBC.

One of the members of the taskforce, former Conservative MP Laura Sandys, said she was "disappointed" by the decision to disband it and "confused" about the government's intentions on the cost of living.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, she said: "If people are at heart of government agenda, energy efficiency must be very first priority to reduce citizens' costs, improve energy security with less energy required, and cut carbon emissions."
