Applications for grants under the scheme opened on 23 May 2022, and 97% of the voucher applications so far have been for air source heat pumps (ASHPs).

In total, of the 4,337 voucher applications received, 4,186 were for ASHPs, 99 for ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), four were for shared ground loop GSHPs, and 48 were for biomass boilers.

Overall, 1,208 redemption applications were received, of which 912 were approved and paid before 1 August.

For those vouchers that have been redeemed, the most common fuel type that the BUS installation replaced was gas (484 redemptions; around 53% of all redemptions). In addition, nearly all BUS redemptions were for installations in domestic properties, with only four installations of ASHP being in non-domestic properties.

The highest number of applications and redemptions to July 2022 has been in the South West and South East (854 and 826 voucher applications, respectively, and 171 redemptions paid in both regions). These two regions collectively account for around 40% of applications and redemptions.

The government also reports that for those vouchers that have been redeemed, the median cost of a BUS installation of an ASHP was £12,832 with a median capacity of 10kW, while the equivalent figures for a GSHP were £26,371 and 13kW, respectively.
