The Use Wood Wisely campaign has warned that the government’s 2020 emissions targets, and commitment to promoting biomass fuel, could harm the UK’s forests.

The UK government has signed up to meet CO2 emissions targets by ensuring that 15% of all our energy requirements are met from renewable energy sources by 2020.

The campaign noted that, while wind, solar and geothermal are all infinite and freely available, woody biomass meets neither of these criteria and is not actually “truly renewable”. Use Wood Wisely believes that this promotion of biomass poses a threat to forests and woodland in the UK.
