The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) has announced the launch of its latest publication, the Safe Water Guide: Scald Prevention and Legionella.

Developed to provide guidance to those responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of plumbing systems, the guide covers the requirements necessary for providing ’safe water’ by minimising Legionella, preventing scalding and understanding the associated duty of care.

The guide covers a range of issues, including:

  • Legionella
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • The control of Legionella and Pseudomonas in water systems
  • Safe water use temperatures
  • Other scalding risks
  • Design & good practice
  • Design and installation principles
  • Sensible precautions
  • Maintaining a clean and safe system
  • Legal matters

Kevin Wellman, chief executive of the CIPHE, said: “The Institute is committed to raising industry standards and promoting safe plumbing in the UK. We are indebted to all the contributors to have provided this important insight into the dangers and hazards often caused by bad plumbing or insufficient maintenance of plumbing systems.”

The guide has been published by the Institute’s Safe Water Group and produced by Tony Malkin, Stan Tildsley and Jim Walley, with additional information from David Harper.

Priced at £20 for members and £35 for non-members, the Safe Water Guide: Scald Prevention and Legionella can be ordered by contacting the CIPHE on 01708 472791 or by emailing info@ciphe.org.uk.
