The construction sector has helped increase UK gross domestic product (GDP) to its fastest level of quarterly expansion growth for nine years.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has today released economic figures for the second quarter of 2010 (Q2), which saw GDP rise by 1.2%. This was higher than the organisation's original estimate of 1.1% growth.

The highest output during Q2 was seen in the construction sector, which rose by 8.5% compared to the 6.6% that the ONS had expected.

Household expenditure also rose 0.7%, compared with a fall of 0.1% in the first quarter of 2010.
