British Standards announced important updates to its BS EN 15287-1 guide last week, including new regulations on 90° bends.
Up until now, the maximum length of a horizontal connecting flue pipe between a solid-fuel-fired appliance and a chimney has been 150mm, and the use of 90° bends has not been allowed at all.
However, with this latest update to BS EN15287-1, acceptable alternative methods have been published which allow for an increase in the length of the horizontal connecting flue pipe to 450mm, and for the use of 90° swept inspection bends – provided that the following criteria are met:
"This will have a considerable impact on the installation process," said David Wright of Scheidel Rite-Vent, manufacturer of chimney systems.
