The new generation electronic HIU is the first to use 5G NB-IoT and the Amazon IoT platform to provide full remote connectivity with the energy centre, wider heat network management and optimisation systems. This delivers highly reliable, low-cost, two-way communications over a management platform that can be accessed from any web device.

The electronic HIU's remote management portal enables installers and operators to monitor performance and update settings for the entire heat network. This simplifies and accelerates the installation, commissioning, and verification processes – providing transparency, cutting costs and easing the road to practical completion.

Remote connectivity and real-time monitoring also enable operators to optimise lifetime heat network performance - driving low-cost operation and proactive maintenance, improved efficiency and reliability, carbon reduction and better customer service.

Other benefits of the ICON HIU remote management portal include:

  • Operators can quickly and efficiently set up, commission and verify performance of HIUs and tertiary systems.
  • Complete system transparency enables installers and operators to identify common quality issues, such as crossed flow and returns.
  • Settings can be remotely monitored and changed to ensure optimum HIU performance, according to varying network conditions. This is particularly useful during initial heat network tuning and validation and supports CIBSE CP1 verification compliance.
  • Identify HIU errors remotely, often before interruption to service – enabling targeted planned maintenance and reduced emergency call outs.

Designed for modern next generation heat networks to CIBSE Code of Practice guidelines, and with full WRAS and BESA approval, the ICON HIU, which is manufactured in the UK, offers multiple connectivity options, including 5G NB-IoT, GPRS, Ethernet, ModBus and MBus.

There is no vendor lock-in because the HIU management portal is open to authorised third parties. ICON also supports third party billing and payment systems, with no additional hardware requirements, such as cut off valves. In addition, ICON incorporates an automatic meter reading system, avoiding the usual capital cost of purchasing separate equipment.

Richard Harrison, CEO of Switch2 Energy, explained: “On existing heat networks, ICON is helping to improve heat network efficiency by up to 35% – resulting in large cost savings and reducing CO2 emissions by as much as 40%.

“We are proud to lead on smart technology innovation and look forward to helping installers and  operators to deliver greener, high efficiency, lower cost new generation district and community heating schemes."
