Mixergy smart hot water cylinder owners who opt in to Mixergy Extra when they sign up for a British Gas fixed-rate tariff will save £40 a year. The rebate will be applied as a £10 credit to their British Gas bill every quarter. Mixergy says the average Mixergy cylinder uses approximately 40% less power to heat hot water than a conventional hot water cylinder, so this offer is in addition to these savings.

Over 70% of all Mixergy customers are already subscribed to Mixergy Hero, which helps to solve grid congestion. With Mixergy Extra, customers can benefit from extra financial rewards when they enable British Gas to optimise their Mixergy cylinder to heat when local or national electric demand is lower. This is said to be the first offer of its kind in the UK that pays the homeowner to switch on the hot water cylinder during low peak times. Actions like this support the national grid's onboarding of more renewables, which is a vital step in the journey towards net-zero.

Pete Armstrong, CEO of Mixergy, explained: “We have been working with British Gas to explore how hot water cylinders can support our power grid infrastructure by alleviating grid congestions. Imagine if every hot water cylinder in the UK worked just like a battery and was connected to the grid so you could charge when power was cheapest and cleanest? This could free up a phenomenal amount of room to onboard more renewables. Instead of paying windfarms to switch off, we could pay homeowners to switch on.”

John Evans, Commercial Director of British Gas, said: “This offer supports our ambitions to decarbonise homes. The Mixergy smart hot water cylinder uses less energy to heat water faster, which saves our customers money while also supporting grid demand. We want to encourage more of our customers to take up these benefits so are giving them an added incentive to switch and reduce cost and carbon.”

The British Gas Mixergy Extra offer will be available from September 2024.
