BEAMA encourages the installation of products like thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) to ensure good hygiene, and prevent the spread of bacteria resistant to antibiotics by making handwashing easy and effective.
Good hygiene can help prevent further over-use of antibiotics as the spread of bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, that lead to serious infections could be reduced. One way help combat bacterial growth is by washing your hands multiple times a day.
TMVs accurately control water temperatures at point of use and are designed to maintain the desired temperature even when the incoming water pressures or flow rates change.
Without thermostatic control, water temperature may become unsafe or uncomfortable during handwashing, making removal of bacteria less likely. The benefits of this particularly in hospitals has been highlighted by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).
Use of non-thermostatic products with a sign warning of ‘very hot water’ may discourage people from washing their hands effectively due to uncomfortable water. Given the seriousness of the issue, BEAMA encourages all responsible partners to consider the benefits of safe water temperatures through the use of TMVs.
